KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Egg Farmers Association (JEFA) today in a release thanked the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture & Fisheries (MICAF) and the Government for their support in providing a subsidy from April 22 to May 1.

This subsidy, the JEFA said allowed farmers to sell their massive inventory of eggs at a heavily discounted price following the closure of hotels and restaurants due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The subsidy allowed consumers to benefit from a special price of $500 for a flat of 2 ? dozen eggs and in a show of appreciation for their support the egg farmers extended the special price to May 7.

“However, this special price has now been discontinued in keeping with the lifting of?the government subsidy, but adequate supplies of eggs continue to be available through special farmers' markets, supermarkets and other marketing initiatives at competitive prices,” the JEFA release said.
