The Editor,

The call by the private sector entities to reopen the economy must not be seen as an attempt to show their powers or any leverage they have over the Government.

The harsh reality we are facing is one where workers, and many others who live a day to day existence are so devastated by the effects of COVID-19 that they are not even operating on fumes. It a drip by drip existence at the moment.

Yet, in any attempt to reopen the local economy careful thought must be given to our invisible enemy, the coronavirus.

So, any reopening must be phased with strict adherence to the various rules of social distancing among others.

If we do not have a phased reopening, let us say by June 1, Jamaica is going to see an uptick in crime, disputes and such the like.

The bitterness of COVID-19 is upon us, so let start small by reducing the curfew hours from the present 6:00 pm to 6:00 am to 10:00 pm to 6:00 am each day starting on Monday next.

With these increased hours, slowly allow sectors which are banned from opening to open once health protocols are decided.

These are just my thoughts.
